Il Pazzo is an educational orchestra work suitable for performance in churches. The music has been woven around the rich assembly of characters in the medieval legend “Lysflammen” (Candle Flame), written by Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf. The story of the warrior Raniero who embarks on a crusade to Jerusalem, but who returns home to Florence a new person, is beautiful, thought-provoking and filled with action. Lagerlöf's text has been adapted for this project by Solveig Birkeland. The work can also be dramatized – for example through collaboration with a theatre group. The work includes several types of ensemble and a wide range of levels, spanning from aspirant to chamber orchestra, small chamber groups, solos and tuttis. The youngest musicians have also been given singing parts. It will be advantageous if skilled group leaders / instructors lead the individual voices.
